Recorded in 2006, and released in 2007. This is MMH's tape cut up, funkee loop and amplified anything gem. This tape never really saw the light of day, as I think the original pressing was much less than 50 (although beniffereditions.com sez 60 which was my guess). This is the first of DOZENS of classic beniffer reissues, which i will put out one a week or so for the next few months. The tape comes in a 4 color screenprint interpreting a SICK KICK of a rasslin company from 92-95....any takers? It's $5...

Here's the new batch of this disturbing found tape. I was invited to speak about publishing material such as this at York University with Ulysses Castellanos in 2009 as a part of Allyson Mitchell's New Media Course. I have never really been able to do a proper write up on this piece, because It continually shocks me. More akin to De Sica's Shoeshine masterpiece, rather than say a Visitor Q (which was an original reference point for me in 2005). Still $5, but it comes as a 2 color screenprint in a standard case, professionally mastered and duplicated.

Belgian fluxus artist Ludo Mich on Beniffer - First time! Excuse the cell phone photographs of a very serious submission and the subsequent attention to detail on packaging. We have the A side as a Mich growler, with additional sounds and final touches by Kiyoharu Kuwayama. The B side conatins the piece "The Fluidium". A concrete vocal exploration with additional sax and synth accompaniments. Comes in a sextuple foldout hand cut box with 5 color silkscreen on the front of images submitted to BFF from L.M. RYAN DRIVER QUINTET "GLAMOUR"

For some time now the Quintet has assembled in the Southern Cross room of the Tranzac club in Toronto every last Friday of every month. When the clock strikes 10 the magic hour begins; ivory keys unfurl and dance on exuberant embers, cymbals recline for a lazy twilight grooming and slack strings pluck and slap back on the warm gloss of a veritable fantasia or else mutter exhausted impersonations of an ancient river's caterwaul. Carried along in their current is the buoyant voice of Mr.Driver, who in his unique stride intones unaffected arias of love and loss.
To call this psychedelic lounge, with all it's negative Buddah Bar connotation, would be slanderous. What I don't mind calling it is Really Nice Music.
Comes in a white clamshell case with a silkscreened, photocopied and hand dotted cover.

We here at Beniffer are pleased to bring to you two projects by the ever impressive Keith Fullerton Whitman who not only runs the most thorough and tasteful distro on the internet these days but has, in his possession, the magic wand that only true electronic music wizards can lay claim to.
The Hrvatski side seems to me like the wettest, wildest dreams of Alex Empire who has been institutionalized after seeing god in the pages of a Bop magazine which he systematically ate out of a blender which wouldn't turn off. There is a lot of things happening here, but at the center of it all is a relentless sort of car chase beat pattern that never let's up which is perfect if you're late for a blowjob scene in a Michael Bay movie.
The KFW piece, bereft of the onslaught of side one, nonetheless bows to the same caffeinated deity. This time around the main attraction is mysterious foreground warble, like intercepted noise off a sphinxlike anomaly, transmitting vague messages from a subterranean religion, washed out in the last ice age.
The cassette comes in a sleeve with a full size double sided poster with silkscreened art by Jacob Horwood on the cover, something else on the back by Andrew Zukerman.

ZAMUT NEVAGNU ENIARROL "SIGNALS FROM ORIGIN FIVE"

This is another mid-nineties gem from the same starry-eyed subterranean drug cult that spawned thee Gnostics, but unlike the panoramic grab-bag of semi-rehearsed garage-punk lunacy of the double cassette released earlier this year, this contains but one "dosed" session from the winter of 1994. The aural residue left from said session illustrates the ascent into lysergic connectedness, moving at once from dissonent bog water rafting, through insect-like walls of anxious indigestion and high noon-style orchestral tuning, through incendiary pastures of sandy quilts and eastern mysticism and finally down the quaking path of a schizophrenic quarry where churning harmoniums and medieval poetry coalesce into the ultimate hell ride. Everything here vibrates with the violent calm before a holographic lobotomy and I can only give it the highest recommend for those looking to expand their what the fuck collection.
Tape comes in a case.

Alrighta! - all thanks to hazy for this review of doseth1's first LP - we will be distroing this joint most likely in a month when the summer catalog is ready...until then....

"Like most bands that have sprouted from Toronto's fertile psychedelic/noise underground, Disguises is a band whose sound is an amalgam of influences – each member brings his own unique musical schema to the party. Drummer Randall Gagne, the newest member of the band, originally hails from Cambridge, a small commuter city about an hour's drive from Toronto proper (incidentally, I recently moved from Toronto to Cambridge last year). Cambridge is a weird, mutant city – the result of amalgamating three large towns. There are factories across the street from subdivisions and conservation areas near metal refineries. To get anywhere, you have to get in a car and drive. Gagne's solo work as Man Made Hill reflects this weird, pseudo-suburban lifestyle, without the false glamour and neighbour-baiting angst.

“Puzzle Answers,” Man Made Hill's first slab of vinyl, is a pastiche of 1980s synthesizer slime, loose drum machine rhythms and bizarre pitch-shifted vocal glee. It's a record you might find on the Mutant Sounds blog, sandwiched between an obscure Yamatsuka Eye record and a European coldwave cassette. There's a subtle sense of humour present on every track, but it doesn't detract from the music at all. Gagne's hit upon a fresh sound, one that's both a throwback to the plastic 1980s and a look forward to decades unknown. Have you ever heard a pinball machine collapse down a flight of touch sensitive keyboard stairs? Have you lived la vida loca with marinara coursing through your veins? Have you ever seen or felt the white soul combing the churn of a century-old fox trot interlude? The debut long playing vinyl of Randy Gagne's Man Made Hill is the key to that door. Behind it ceiling fans actively seek out shit piles to fling into the brackish waft of a slaughterhouse dance floor where corpulent slabs of nameless meat careen off their hooks in a mockery of modern dance. Technotronic hot flashes floss the slippery keyboard runs of a synthesized marimba with food poisoning recalling the histrionic hand clapping and mellifluous tinsel pulling of The Flying Lizards. During a sentimental reprieve an overworked farm hand ceases his ploughing and looks up to a horizon riddled with plush clouds and mops his brow with a dirty handkerchief. It's been a long hot day and it's time to do the pump rectilinear the air we breathe.

stoked to get this release going as soon as the submission came in the door - well well well - explicitly described as minimalist splatter anti dance music - this thing is recorded so well its not even funny - one complex synth patch comes in and out of the stereo channels and these super weird drum patterns evolve over the course of the tape - the print i made is just the beginning - its a five color 18x24 poster, and we will have some zukerman in the mix too - ladies - still figuring out how to assemble it all, but word is there are some warehouse finds of original cmyk screenprints by michael veet, sekitani and more being considered for this package - more as it develops!

we just received our copies of the new gastric female reflex 7" record entitled "plays the music of alan ant farm". the record is housed in a 3 color silkscreened sleeve that we printed with an insert or two. the record itself was pressed on white vinyl and released by the lips infection imprint from italy. we have several copies that we're letting go for $5 a piece. this: =^-_-^=

if you're wondering about some of the missing items from the last update - lemme fill you in.

the man made hill LP is still happening, listened to the test pressings the other day and it's going to rule worlds... the pressing shall be an edition of 300 on white vinyl and released in conjunction with HEALING POWER Records run by scene enthusiast and wolfman, Wolfgang Nessel.

I don't remember if the JIM DANDY lathe ever got listed on one of the old "upcomings" but this is also something that is coming up. it's a 7" in an edition of 12 of THIS.. The record is something that me and Jeff Garcia are working on as a double sided poster package. this is more for ourselves than anything.

above is a photo of something i worked on recently in montreal with the PJ Mansion Boys... it's a lathe cut 7" on acetate, all glued down on marbled paper with a folded-up one-off overprinted poster. the cuts themselves are all unique - not one alike. it was a piece performed directly onto lathe with Dave and Zac cutting backwards, forwards, double-groove, intersecting grooves and locked grooves. playing it back could be either frustrating or interactively stimulating... your choice. so, what do you call it? an edition of 1 in a series of 10? yeah, i think that's what it is...

Brian Ruryk - Cycle of Fords 6x cdr boxset
This is Brian Ruryk's magnum opus - there - i said it. This is a project that he's been working on for a long time now and we here at Beniffer are TICKLED to bring it to you. This is a serious piece of work - 6 cd's of no holds barred cut-up confusion. Using the acoustic guitar as who-knows-what (concept!?!), Ruryk maims, affronts and kicks his axe in the pendulous motherload - does most anything that doesn't involve delving into a red-hot blues detour. With filing cabinets succumbing to Newtonian laws and lids of wet cat food spraying sonic juice and deflecting off of an overturned cassette footstool, there is not much of nothing going on, if that makes sense.
6 blank-ass cdrs come in screenprinted envelopes inside a 1/4 reel box with an insert.

Max Eisenballz (DJ Dog Dick) - From Place to Place cassette
Baltimore's own playboy slumdawg enters your backdoor with the ease of room temperature butter shooting into a lock with a caulking gun; once inside he knits a Cosby-sweater out of your brain with swarthy electronic yarns extruded from junkyard bird-call imitations and confused alarm clocks that mistake PM with FM. Without much further ado he pulls out a CD-RW of himself singing in the shower and you're under the impression it's gossamer burning up on a pot of cooking pasta. I feel like this is the future of hip-hop.
Cassette comes in a reproduction of a box of Moroccan diarrhea medication that Jacob got when his butt was having fecal miscarriages. He was on vacation.

Thee Gnostics - Archival 2x cassette/booklet
In a faraway land, where crystalline car dealerships and stately drive-thru slop shops stood immaculate, a band of sagacious, chemically-altered teaheads huddled in a vacant post office in a tent that was left there from the time of the Sumerians. This was in Hamilton, Ontario - early 90's... Anyway, the ceiling of the tent was deep space; constellations became their pets and unnamed planets became their personal pan pizzas... It was there that they met God, it was all Blueberry shaped non-sequiters and top-heavy answers, enough to cave in the cab of a cube-van. Upon stumbling out of the now fog-encumbered tent their heads were weighted down by the incessant drone of the spheres, a tinnitus-like unceasing that clouded their perception. With nothing else to help with this cochlear roar they harmonized, like a ragtag assembly of Beached Boys with an orphic caveman stomp that matched the brutal profoundness of the soul. Cubic Susuration/Jakob Olausson split 7" lathe
Side one is a oceanic demonstration by Cubic Susuration, better known as Sus. A vocal-based meditation with hazy string accompaniment that reminds this author of the mournful sleeplessness of 4am; fixtures and nuances cast in non-light, acting out their own clandestine lives unknowing of your silent witness. It's teetering creepiness is both a repose and a oracular wooze. I like it!
Side two is a song by Jakob Olausson that didn't make it on to the now classic album Moonlight Farm. Having lived and breathed that album, as I'm sure a lot of you have, I don't think it to be inaccurate to say that this song is a total missing link. All the Jakob elements are there; the deep velveteen intonation of a voice in an ominous well, the consummate weary of pace and tone and the hugeness of a guitar caught in a giant's hairpiece.
The record comes in a special edition inner sleeve, screenprinted jacket inside a printed/sewn fabric bag.

Andrew Zukerman - Don't Dress the Petal Near the Void 1-sided 7" lathe/cassette/poster
This is a recording that was made with mouth, water, tape and percussion. It was multitracked/composed by taping off the erase head on a 1/4 inch tape machine. The cassette is some odds and ends of mostly analog sketches culled off some forgotten reels; compositions for synthesizer/tape loop systems, vocal tomfooleries and straight-up freewheeling tape collage. Comes with a fuckin poster. Also cut at PJ Mansion.

Matthew "Doc" Dunn - Peace Be Your Rider cassette
Doc's new cassette for our humble label begins in the in the dream of a gullible seiner captain and progresses forth into the secret anesthetic world of a Cape Cod bleeding performed on a blind man's estranged guide dog. Having been drained the dog can smoke cigarettes and experience concurrent head rushes.
Matthew rolls with the dexterous style of the Americana giants but rends and teases the strands of tradition thereby wringing out the extruded cry of a guitar getting a deep tissue massage. The strings snap back like ropes on a makeshift bridge enduring the weight of a massive and unknowable universe... Deep music for DEEP TIMEZ.
Cassette comes in a silkscreened foldover by Horwood.

Wasted Nymph - Urlapse cassette
The nymph is back with it's legs spread further apart as if on some demonic exercise machine. The addition of Montreal's Nintendo-psych king Brian Seeger adds a dexterity that make those lady-bumps jump like a bowl of jello on a mechanical bull. With this cycle of new songs, our favorite trio stretch out their ramshackle compositions on the train tracks, allowing them to writhe in delightful syncopation before being jammed underneath westbound freighters carrying Olive Garden Restaurants from town to town.
A single 30 minute cassette comes in the usual white plastic Fantasia case with a cover designed by Josh Bastien of the band and Zukerman.

i wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy new year. we've been working around the clock to bring you the new update that is due to drop in 17 days. a few days ago i had josh from wasted nymph over to design the new cover. the outcome is a sultry striploin of a collaboration that i'll be printing this week, two color on orange bristol. as always the nymph will in ensconced in a white plastic fantasia packaging with daring insertions. we even went as far as to do a photo shoot with them for promotional purposes:

In the pulsating, reiterative mind of a strung out ego burgeons a shapeshifting and incalculable remembrance of the song that was heard when your mind died. Archaic Women is Max of Slim Twig playing that song. Sounds like a Zombies record skipping in a stifling Chernobyl-like exhaust (and sometimes literally is). Here is a sweet slice of psychotropic euphoria from Ayal who with this release celebrates his fourth music-related release on Beniffer. This one is destined to be the prom queen of the lot, already having received rave reviews from my roommate. We've resolved that Sr. has really "reached" with this one, right into the utopia of the minds eye or some such nonsense. Like a teenage can of orange juice concentrate he navigates saccharine psych-pop moves with the clever daint of the Woods Family as fronted by Bobb Trimble. To say that Ayal has outdone himself with this one would be an understatement of hummer-limo proportions, so it would be best for baby to taste this one for himself. Co-written by Jackie Shapiro.
Tape comes cradled in a silkscreened surprise foldout from the active imagination of Jacob Horwood, cover painting by G. Edwards.

The Gnostics is release is nearing completion! it is a 4.5x6 style silkscreened zine/book with original art from the members, reappropriated (sp?) and layered into some other kind of compositions. luminous monolith is the first track on the first side of the first tape (there are two of them).

Brian Ruryk's Cycle of Fords is in the process of being burned... 6 cdr's x edition of 100, you do the math. this is a landmark occasion for us as it is our last cdr release on the label. the whole procedure of burning these cd's, having the burner fail time and time again, checking the discs and realizing that half of them don't work should serve as a testament to my everlasting allergy to this shitty medium. anyway - when it is done it will be AMAZINGGGGGGGGGG. they come in 5" reel boxes!

Archaic Women is the nom de plume of Toronto's Max Turnbull aka Slim Twig. On his debut release under this pseudonym Max rehashes deep psych-pop passages of moribund hipster lines into new a kind of post-something rock melange reminiscent of nothing up to this point... What is it? Like the carnivalesque soft-shoe monkey-dance sung through florid gums and skinny pants, breath all beleaguered with prescription scotch and thai stick, hypnotized by the pummeling custard of 60's tits... Kind of like if Slim Twig was covering his own songs in a phantasmagoric vacuum of subaqueous reverb and pre-cheesy organ plaque between the bridgework of the all-consuming rock and roll aesthetic.

He was here on business pitching tofu roast to the Don Jail culinary staff and i booked him to play my living room. Here is the unexpurgated document of what transpired the morning after said gig. For those of you that aren't yet hip to Seeger's deep loop agenda this is the perfect introduction. This thick jammer is a serpentine dawdle down the corn-row ouroboros of magnetic infinitude; a tape-loop lasso encircling the gamut of aural intention and chance; clarinet and pre-recorded sources run, smear and bitchslaps into and against each other, always on the brim of the gaping black-hole like chasm of analogue delay but never plummeting indefinitely into the slick-rick everlasting-land like so many of his contemporaries.

" Incredible-sounding records that are far too short are extremely frustrating. A prime example is the solo debut from former Herschel Savage and the American Flag member, Ayal Senior. At less than 20 minutes, ?Space Cakes? contains only enough gorgeous guitar/keyboard melodies to merely whet the appetite. If it weren?t for the ?repeat? setting on my CD player, I think I?d lose my mind!!

Senior is a veteran of Toronto?s growing freak scene, playing in the aforementioned HSAF, collaborating with a number of likeminded Torontonian weirdos, and ? oddly enough ? writing the introduction to ?Vampire Vultures,? John Fahey?s posthumous follow-up to ?How Bluegrass Destroyed my Life.? As a solo artist, he combines idiosyncratic synth-pop with rollicking folk guitar to craft a distinctive sound: bedroom psych for extraterrestrial loners. ?Space Cakes? is primarily an instruments-only affair. We still cannot afford to design our own die cuts, so you gotta cut all the details out one at a time. No biggie, i wasn't leaving my house or anything! I just wanted to swan dive with an exacto knife. Which I discovered later was actually an art process known as 'dragon tailing' when you jigsaw forms becoming round shapes out of anything large. it was a pretty obsessive project overall, but the variety of color in the music and the packaging adds just the right amount of backwards question marks to sefice

this was one of those tapes i talked to the bro's about for ages, and it took jase so long to get it to me...or maybe it was just me looosing sleep over it - but there was at one point a listening party for this - thats just special -

so there has never really been a launching of the beast of all beasts from early early this year - we went over out heads on every aspect of this book and it marks the first publication that is text based - what we have here is 48 full color pages of new art by bff staff and a few from mike gagne and randy made hill gagne - the text is something that ive always wanted to share with people - Ayal Senior's pseudo screenplay err screenplay from the late nineties was pretty amusing, and still is - its a super confident university ayal with about 50000 ideas for really incredible film scenarios - except - at a moment, he ditches the idea and goes to the next - good read even almost ten years later

this here is the first and only sounds of north american adult bookstores album on beniffer. this band is essentially gastric female reflex when we were young and interested in making music. now that we're fatigued and morally bankrupt from real life we share these moments of clarity and sheer out-of-printedness with you, our as of yet non-existent public. this album was recorded in 2005 and originally mistaken for a psych album - listening back now we were most likely bemused by the enthusiasm of making something different from what we're used to. all of the tape bullshit, hiss and concret goo-goo ga-ga is still there but the content is noticeably low-key. sources range from gamelan hordes, flash-backs of grassy-knoll looped helicopter tales, legends of vcr malfunction, zither behemoth and waking-life reverb - no coffee. this is also one of the most terribly recorded of our albums.
sonaabs on this recording is jacob horwood, andrew zukerman and an occasional william a. davison of six heads, nurse with wound, et al.
not really that much more to say about it other than i hope someone has read up to this point...
